What do you want people to get out of your film? Well, first and foremost, the film's a comedy -- I obviously want people to laugh and have a good time. But ultimately, I would love for some people to walk away with a bit more. I think of the film as more of an "intelligent comedy" rather than a piece of fluff. A lot of the laughs come from poking fun at larger issues, such as the way the film plays with stereotypes. Most of the characters, at a base level, represent a stereotype (i.e. lesbian, bisexual, straight, German). Some of the characters embody their stereotypes while others defy them; the more complex characters do both. Additionally, many of the characters, most notably Jamie, project stereotypes onto other people. One of the biggest ironies is that Jamie is just as bad as Hollywood in terms of her black-and-white perspective. Butch women don't fit into Hollywood's world just as much as straight men, bisexuals, and foreigners don't fit into her world. She is frustrated with a system that operates under the same principles as she does, but she of course can't see this. It is through these stereotypes that Jamie makes sense of the world -- "men do this," "people like you say that," etc. And it is her way of understanding her own place as a butch woman who is seemingly at odds with everyone else; her experience has always been "me" vs. "you." I think for Jamie, true happiness comes from finding and embracing her complex self within an even more complex world. In connecting with the other characters throughout the film, a lot of the walls that she has built up between herself and other people, namely other "types" of people, come down. Thematically, there is the "be yourself" idea -- that everyone should embrace his or her individuality; however, there is also the acknowledgment that in a larger sense, we're not so incredibly different. |
